Obituary: Farewell to a chief

A veteran journalist, Amir Daud, has passed away yesterday. Indonesia missed one of its great persons.

The first chief editor of The Jakarta Post and respected veteran journalist, Amir Daud, has died Saturday after he was hospitalized Tuesday at the Metropolitan Medical Center (MMC) for diabetes and heart problems. He was 78.

A lecturer of over 15 years at the Dr. Soetomo Press Institute, he was also a former chief editor at the Bisnis Indonesia daily.

Born in Solok, West Sumatra, on Nov. 21, 1927, Daud started out in journalism in 1946 as a typist at the state-run Antara news agency. During his 60-year career, he had worked for TIME magazine, Pedoman daily and Tempo magazine.

He was the Post’s chief editor from 1983-85.

The body is laid out at Jl. Sawo Raya no. 2, Rawamangun, in East Jakarta, and the funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday at Tanah Kusir public cemetery in South Jakarta.

He is survived by his wife Hasnah Daud and four children.
